Have made The Switch

When changing jobs to iSpace I have also moved to the wonderful world of mac OSX.

Is it great? Is it fantastic? Am I like the cool guy in the adds?

I think my conclusion is that the ecstasy of mac-users have highly over-hyped the wonders of OSX. It IS great and cool and all that, but it just isn’t that much better than what Redmond can do.

I was so fortunate to switch from XP to Windows Vista in my previous job, and now to OSX 10.5.2, so I can relatively easy compare the three:

XP really is a very old system. I had gotten used to it and it worked. Vista was a huge improvement on XP with better navigation like the easy-to-use drop-down menu included in the folder paths at the top of each window. And when saving a file I got a great overview of relevant places to put my files.

OSX has the Finder. And it is better than XP but it doesn’t work as well as Vista’s folder-path-thing.

On the overall level there are just sp many things that are mac specific, and doesn’t work as well as on the PC platform. I know all designer love OSX, and interaction and experience-wise it is good. But I also think that one could make a more objective comparison of the two Microsoft’s Vista OS would not be as bullied as it is today.

I graphical terms, what I means is:

If one could deduct the happy-brainwashed positive hype of mac-geeks from the perceived level of quality of the OSX as an operating system, similarly clean the negative hype around vista out of an actual comparison, I think the result would be more like the above.

But still: I switched, and I am working on becoming a happy mac user.
